Default Do you downshift and when coming to a stop, or drop into neutral and use your brakes?

Just wondering preferences here, along with pros and cons. I'm still getting used to my new ranger, and its manual transmission, and haven't decided on whether or not its better to downshift and brake when coming to a stop, or throwing her in neutral and just using my brakes.

Just a little info on the truck, its a M5OD with 108,000 on it, recently, and I mean RECENTLY changed fluid, from Mercon to Redline D4.

Im a coaster, I pull it into neutral and coast a while before using the brakes. I rarely downshift to slow down.

I was taught that the vehicle should be in a useable gear at all times in case you need to accelerate out of a situation. As a result I always downshift as the truck slows down through a gear and use both the brakes and engine compression to slow down.

This.

Also, just a word of advice. I'd rather use the brakes than downshift. It's a whole lot easier to do a brake job than it is to do a clutch job.

I do a bit of both, I was taught to keep a manual in a gear at all times. But often I get lazy so I coast a fair bit to, I also think coasting gives better gas mileage. I could be completely wrong about that though

I use the brakes, but while slowing down I will put it in the right gear for that speed incase I have to keep going

No it's the opposite actually, the weight of the car is turning the engine over without using any gas, when coming to a stop in a gear, the engine uses very little fuel at all, man I wish I had gotten my ranger with a manual gearbox, the only time I get to drive manual is in my sisters Mini Cooper...

Huh, I didn't know that. Thanks!

I can not agree with that. I used to do both and my mileage never changed doing either method.

I do a lot of highway driving, so most of the time when I'm coming to a stop, it's from 5th gear at 70 mph, taking an exit ramp to the stop sign at the bottom of the ramp.

I just leave it in 5th until I'm down around 30 mph or so (rpms around 1000), then I'll switch to neutral and use the brakes. I sure don't pass through all the gears every time I come to a stop.

My dad was a trucker he always said use the gears for slowing down save the brakes when u need them. So that's what I use. The tranny for slowing down.
