Default When does your truck shift into O/D?

Been sniffing around for a bit and can't seem to find any concrete info, and as some of you know I've repaired my tranny not long ago with a rebuilt valve body, and seems to drive fine. I just got it insured and have finally gotten to get it out on the highway.

My question is, what speed (with light throttle, I'm an old fart-style driver) does your overdrive engage in your auto tranny? Most of my vehicles can engage around 41 MPH, but this truck seems to want to delay until around 47 with no load. Unfortunately, the speed limit around here is 45, so many times it never engages since I really don't want a speeding ticket. I don't think it's a problem, as it does engage fine when it does engage, no slipping and no fuss. But I am curious as to the shift points everyone has under light acceleration to ensure mine is not just an odd ball.

Thanks for the info guys. I might be a little fuzzy on overdrive or the torque converter locking up, I can't quite remember the sequence. The shift I'm concerned with is the very last one that sticks your rpm's at about 1500 at 45 MPH. Mine shifts 4 times (one around 38 MPH) and rides at about 2000 RPM at 45. If I drive a bit faster, it seemingly shifts again around 48 and the RPM's drop to about 1500 at 45.

So I guess I should say, when does your torque converter lock up?

May be wrong but I believe the convertor locks up at any cruising speed and will come out when you accelerate. my truck go's into overdrive at 45mph@1500rpms....60mph@2000rpms with 3.55 rear..

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

Torque it down till it breaks off, then back it off 1/4 turn.

Yes, I always knew the torque converter locked up last, but for some reason, everywhere I read on these trannies say they go from 1-2, 2-3, 3-lockup, lockup-4. It made no sense to me, but that's what I always read.

After my torque converter locks up (~48MPH) I'm sitting at roughly 1500 with a 3.73 rear end. It just feels like it doesn't want to lock unless the road is perfectly flat or downhill, I'm doing 48 or faster, and I'm giving it nearly no throttle at all, as opposed to my Focus that will lockup at 40 going uphill at half throttle.

I wonder if it's because I have the auxillary transmission cooler since my truck was a fleet vehicle. I wonder if it's just taking forever to get warm enough for lockup. We'll definitely see now that things are warming around here.

Depending on rate of acceleration the TC will lock in gears other than 4th (or 5th if you have a 5 speed auto) If you pay attention while accelerating slower you might feel the TC lock between gears. As for the TC not wanting to lock or stay locked that could be a TC issue but keep in mind, you are driving an anemic 3.0, it will not stay in OD as often because it doesnt have the power to maintain speed under some circumstances with the TC locked in high gear so it will have a tendency to shift in and out of OD or TC lockup.

I've got 148k on her.

I watch my gear ratio with my scangauge until I see it hit overdrive (gear ratio=0.75). That happens around 38'ish, so I know I'm in overdrive at that point. It seems that even at 45, with nearly no throttle input, it still doesn't want to engage lockup. Although, I do have a shift kit, which may be restricting TC pressure to prevent clutch burnout. Not sure what the fine detail characteristics of the transgo kit are, although I'm sure it will alter from the norm for the good of your tranny and all Ranger-kind.

I don't think it has a problem, but as said before, it just seems to have to be at a higher speed and much lighter throttle position before it wants to lock. Much more so than my other vehicles. Of course, I also don't know what PCM software revision it has. Maybe that was a changed parameter; we'll never know, since Ford never says what its PCM updates are for.
