Default Re: Transmission noise 5 speed

I thought my tranny was making a weird noise after I had my clutch replaced. Turns out there is an exhaust joint down there that had a bad gasket and was making the noise. Maybe check that?

Prices up here in Canada don't seem to match up with prices in the states. I was quoted $2900 for a rebuild tranny plus $1000 installation. I went around to 4 different tranny shops in the city and that was nearly the price everywhere. And I don't like to buy things like that from junkyards... I'm worried about how the last guy treated his truck, and for all I know that tranny has the same issues or different ones to deal with down the road.

Default Re: Transmission noise 5 speed

I first changed the ATF in my 5 speed when it had ~100,000 miles and noitced the noise level did not change. I searched for alternatives and changed it again at ~150,000 and this time there was a dramatic decrease in the gear and bearing noise. It also shifted more smoothly. The difference?? I used Red Line Synthetic Oil 30204 - Red Line High-Temp Automatic Transmission Fluid which has a viscosity about twice that of normal Mercon ATF. I kept the Ranger until 250,000 miles and the trans still shifted like it was new and had very little noise.
