Default 2001 Ranger Transmission

Guys,

I'm desperate. I've read so many conflicting statements on this.

I've got a trans going south in my 98 Ranger (2.5L)

I've found a replacement that the guy seems to be sure that a 2001 Ranger 3.0L auto is the same as a 2000 Ranger 3.0L and will fit. Anywhere I look, I find that the 2001s have the 5R44E, and that it won't fit.

Other places show that the 4R44E goes through Rangers up until 2005.

Is there any way to decipher whether the trans is a 4R44E, 4R55E, or a 5R44E when I go to look at it?

This is such a pain in the ass, and I'm ready to tear some hair out!

Thanks for any and all help you can offer!

Sorry for your frustration, theres problably a tag, or one of those numbers somewhere on the side of the transmission.

Hope this helps!

It's all good. It's just a pain in the ass, because it's the daily driver, and it's getting worse and worse. I've found (what could be) a great deal on a trans, but I don't know if it'll work. It's definitely going to be something I'll need to know a little before I drive a little bit to go check this thing out.

The 5R is the 5 speed and the 4R is the 4 speed. I forget when they changed to the 5R, but I can assure you after 2001 all rangers had 5R transmissions.

Just wondering what the exact issue is? There is a $20 VSS sensor in the differential that can mess up the shifting. Is your abs light on? Is your speedometer working?

I am pretty sure you can not put a Tranny from a 3.0 or 4.0 on a 2..5 because the bellhousing is different. You might be able to swap the bellhousings but i have no idea what that would take but I am sure others will chime in.

Take a look at this link

I'm in Ann Arbor, and the trans I have is a 4R44E. I know this.

There is a trans I'm looking at buying that came out of a 2001 Ranger 4x2 and he said it fits a 2000 and a 2001. The problem is that a 2000 trans is supposed to be a 4R44 or a 4R55, and the 2001 is a big question mark.

He said the tag shows RFXL 2P 7006-AB

Does anyone know what that ^^ means?

Yikes again. If the tranny is from a 3.0 it will not match the 2.5 ask the guy if the bellhohsings can be swapped.

I apologize. When it's cold, the trans won't engage without revving a little to bring the rpm up. Even once it's warm, whenever you stop, it's the same thing, you need to rev the engine up to get the trans to grab. It doesn't matter forward or reverse, it just doesn't want to grab. More recently, it's begun downshifting on the freeway randomly, and then upshifting into overdrive. The ABS light is not on, and there are no thrown trans codes.

I apologize. I was misinformed by another forum then. Thanks for the help

Can another member chime in and explain to me why the OP would not spend 15 minutes and $20 to change the VSS just for Sh!ts and giggles? after all he has no transmission codes hell he should try and catch a pending engine code. I have seen TPS issues mimic tranny issues

Yes, the speedo works fine.

I'm no mechanic, and I'll be the first to admit that. That's why I'm coming here to try to get all the info and advice I can.

I'll also admit that reading some of the posts off of my phone at work isn't the best for taking in and answering all of the questions. Sorry man.

Being that I'm no mechanic, and this is my first Ranger, what is the VSS? If it's only 20 bucks, I would be more than willing to see about changing it to see what happens. Sorry for the NOOB-isms.

Read the threads below.

How many miles?

Have you checked the tranny fluid level? You do this with the truck running in park.

Have you check for engine codes?

The reason I am balkng on the tranny is because you have no tranny codes.

Transmission?

Rear ABS engages, speedo drops to 0, no light

The truck has 188k on it. The trans fluid is fine, right where it should be on the stick. And there was one engine code, dealing with air flow, but that was taken care of.

The thread is quite helpful, however, the truck doesn't have any of those symptoms. The speedo is solid all the way through the gears (once it gets going) and under braking, there is nothing other than smooth stopping.

I've also noticed that there seems to be a bushing that doesn't look right at the end of the extension housing. I'm not sure how it's supposed to be setup around the tail shaft-to-drive shaft spline. Could that bushing be allowing a little trans fluid to get by the output shaft seal, and I don't think it's supposed to hold a lot of fluid back. I've been on top of checking the fluid and periodically topping it off, but I'm wondering if that might have something to do with the fluid loss...
