Default Valve Body Gasket Replacement Parts

Hello all!

I started yesterday out with a blinking overdrive light, and had the local tranny shop run the code. Came back with a blown valve body gasket, for which they were asking $300 to replace. I know I can do the job for about 15-20% the cost, so that's what I would like to do.

I made the mistake of going with inferior quality (Dorman) when I changed my cam sync, and don't want to feel the same way again. So what I am asking is, which brand gasket do I want to go with? Links to online retailers would be ideal, but as long as I know the brand I can find it.

And a backseat question. Should I worry about replacing the cover gasket while I'm there, or just play that by ear based on how it looks when I take it out?

id recommend going to ford and buying one there they are not terribly expensive 30$ if i remember right this way you know you are getting good quality.

and while you have all that dropped you might as well replace the filter and the cover gasket which usually comes in a kit together.

On your advice, and that of others in PM's, I went to the local Ford dealer and ordered the new gasket piece. It's an all in one spacer type piece, that includes the gaskets already on it. Cost me about $42 today.

Went ahead and got new fluid for a flush, and a new filter and cover gasket while I'm at it. That way I won't have to pull it apart again

Thanks to those that helped.

smart way to do it and good luck try to keep track of all the bolts as they are location specific I found out the hard way and it takes a little while to get them back in the right spot

I was able to tackle the project yesterday finally. Thought I would update.

I would recommend at least jacking the vehicle up and placing it on stands, or driving up on some ramps. I can't tell you the number of times I could have used even 2" of extra clearance, but would have liked 6.

The whole project was completed outside, on concrete driveway in 18 degree weather, which made it harder than it needed to be. Because of the temp, I was trying to get it done quickly, and forgot to line up the post with the spool, only to realize it after torquing everything down, and refilling with fluid. (The result of which was, regardless of what gear my indicator said it was in, it was stuck in 1st.) Got out this morning to undo my mistake, and everything is working great now, but what a pain it was.

The result is sooner, much smoother shifting.
