Default Help me fix my 98 ranger 4wd system

I have a 98 ford ranger 4.0 XLT with a faulty 4x4. I need a new vaccum pump, lines, transfer case and transfer case motor. I was wondering if it made sense to do it myself rather than the ford dealer. They gave me a starting cost over the phone of about $900 but I know they will find a place to drive up costs. If anyone knows how to fix any of these please help me by explaining it in detail as to where it is and how to exchange the parts right.

most of it should be pretty straight forward to do yourself grab a haynes manual and get to work. the biggest 2 items on that list to me would be the vacuum pump (because i have no idea where that is located) and the transfer case (not sure if you are rebuilding or just replacing)

if it was me i would save the money

Why do you need a new Tcase?

Well I'm not sure if I need a new one yet. I've talked to the dealership after the diagnostics and they said it is "making noise" which leads me to think I need a new one. I've been pricing it out and it looks like it will be about half their starting cost to buy all of the parts. I'm very dedicated to getting this car going off road at a lower cost. Thank you guys for your help. Keep the info flowing.

I doubt you need a TC. These things are simple. New rugged ridge hubs for $130 and 30 minutes work will solve the vacuum issue .

What is the actual problem? Do you have fluid in the TC?

I am not a 4x4 expert but I did not know these had vacuum pumps. I think the rugged ridge hubs will solve the issue anyways

This^ transfer cases rarely go bad, since they are very basic.

Fixed the vacuum lines today. Tested my the 4wd and the 4wd low setting seemed to kick in. Couldn't tell by myself if high did. I imagine it did even though the dealership said my front left hub doesn't hold vacuum. Any thoughts? No transfer case grinding at all this time either... Not sure why. Still think i may get a rebuild kit of some sort for it. Thank you guys for your help.

How much fluid should be in the T Case?

Went through it and got a better under standing of what I was dealing with. The transfer case was not fully engaging which was making the grinding sound that was diagnosed. I swapped out the transfer case motor and have not herd the sound since when I've tested it. If you are doing this swap you may run into a problem where you have an extra wire coming from the transfer case that does not seem to disconnect. Pull the red clip out in the middle of the connector and you will be able to slide it out of the old and into the new motor. It's an easy fix. Don't let the dealership convince you to either get a new transfer case or let them do the work. To all those hearing t case noise give this a try. Now all I have to do is put in new manual hubs and I'll be in business.
