Default Transmission wont go into Drive when cold and going down hill

1996 Ford Ranger 4 cylinder

So now that it is cold when I go to leabe in the morning my truck reverses and goes into drive but when I get to the bottom of my driveway (its a steep hill) it just revs. After coasting to level road it takes about 45 seconds and gets back in gear and does great. It only does this on cold days. When I leave somewhere on flat road and its cold it does just fine?

Let the truck warm up so that the fluid gets warm.

Check your fluid levels as well. When's the last time you change the tranny fluid and filter?
