Default So I bought a ranger 2 weeks ago.

I drove it around on a test drive and everything was fine. Then when I drove it off the lot onto the highway home, it started shifting hard and the o/d light started blinking. So i call them pretty pissed and I gave them the transmission code for 3rd gear wrong ratio (can't remember the code number off hand). They tried to fix it the past 2 days but couldn't so they offered to put a rebuilt transmission in.

So my question is should I tell them to send the truck out to rebuild my current transmission, or should I have them put in a different rebuilt transmission? If I have them put a rebuilt one in I feel I should get all the info on the vehicle it came out of etc. I also am sketched out by that cuz despite my transmission being junk its only got 76 thousand miles on it, I don't want a rebuilt transmission from some truck with 200k or something. What should I do?

I'm going to ask them all these questions tomorrow but I'm asking yall your opinion.

Yes but if I'm getting a transmission rebuilt for free I'd rather do that than return this truck and search again for another truck when a new england winter is knocking on the door. Is that insane maybe but i dunno. Also its if the truck doesn't pass inspection, it passed.

It applies to used here in mass, but im pretty sure its if it doesn't pass inspection and the repairs cost the buyer more than a 10th of the price of the car. The dealer has been making the effort to fix this on their dime so I don't want to go too overboard throwing laws at them and returning the truck at this point.

I would also question who rebuilt it if you go that route or who is going to rebuild the current one and what is their reputation.

I think I would return the truck. I mean, my thought is that they could just bandaid it and you will end up with the issue in 6 months

Have it sent out to be rebuilt. Get the name of the shop that will be doing the work, and call them to verify everything.

true thats why i want to find a trusted trans shop around here. Then have them pay for it when the bill comes.

Sounds like the dealer is trying 100% to make it right with you... that's something rare in a dealership.

I'd have them rebuild your tranny.

Buying a used vehicle varies state by state.

A couple things come to mind. First, winter approaching is irrelevant because you possibly will have issues down the road with a vehicle that you can't use but must make payments on. Second, there are laws in every state that are supposed to help the consumer. It may be hard to prove that the dealer did or did not know whether or not the transmission was bad before selling, but it does look suspicious that you took a test drive and everything was O.K. but on the ride home things started happening. You should be able to go into any dealer and get a report called the OASIS that other members highly recommend. If the issues were known before, then the previous owner purposely got rid of the vehicle to avoid further issues down the road, but more importantly the information would should up on the report.

I would still like to believe that if something major were to go wrong with a vehicle, such as a transmission, then that could very well be 1/10th the price of the car, and regardless, if the vehicle passed inspection or not, you could still have some recourse. I would not want a rebuilt transmission on my vehicle -- especially one with only 76,000 miles. I, also, wouldn't take the dealers word or the fact that they are "playing nicely" as the same as playing fair or "trying to help" because noone at this point knows whether or not the dealer was aware of the issue in the first place. Also, they probably know the laws in the state in which they operate, so they might be "pretending to help" so you go away. Fortunately, there are laws meant to protect the consumer, so before you roll over, I'd be polite, pick your battle(s) appropriately, but also arm yourself with the information needed to make an informed decision. There is definitely a difference between being a dick and yelling and screaming and threatening a lawsuit vs. going in politely asking to take the vehicle back. It is a tough proposition because you are buying used and not new, but there is valuable information available on the web at your fingertips.

This can present problems of its own because a third party is likely to get involved, and what happens if the transmission fails? Whoever rebuilt it is probably out of liability because that is what happens with a rebuilt. My dad recently had his transmission replaced in his 02' Taurus with approx. 79,000 miles by a reputable shop, and the only warranty they gave was like 4 months or 1,000/1,500 miles.

+1, and see my comments above. Also, one would expect to drive the vehicle longer than the way home before problems occurred. You said that the testdrive went well, and the problems occured during the ride home. I would have tried immediately to return the vehicle because some places claim to have a "48 - 72 hassle-free return for any reason". Are you sure that the dealer doesn't have a 14 day or 30 day similar policy? Some dealerships stand by anything they sell -- even if the mileage were 100,000 and the vehicle were 10 years old!

It may be a rare thing in the car selling business "to try to make it right", but it all depends on their motive and if they knew the truck were "defective" to begin with. They may be looking at the added expense as the cost of doing business and/or they may have marked the truck's price before putting it for sale. Remember, dealers have to pay taxes on inventory, so they benefit by the vehicle quickly selling. All that has to be taken into account, and I still wouldn't have them rebuild my tranny unless it were the absolute last resort.

I have a 60 day warranty. Winter does play a roll because work does not stop and if i give it back I don't have a vehicle at all. Im going to request the information you suggested.

I'd return it, but if you don't return it see if you can get a warranty on the transmission... I feel like you deserve peace of mind since you're already having to have repairs done
