Convert AUTO To Manual
Hi everyone. I currently have a 2002 Ford ranger 2wd. Yes i know its a 2wd, i wish it was a 4x4 but it gets the job done. Couldnt find anything else in my price range. Anyway. My truck only has 58,000 miles on it and it is in great condition. Im not a big automatic person, to be honest i cant stand it. I want to convert it to a manual. I just wanted to know what i will need and how much everything will cost, also where to buy the parts. From what i hear everything should cost me around 1500 dollars, possibly less. I would do the job myself. These shops by me are telling me everything including the labor will run me 6,000 dollars. I dont believe them because i was told by friends of my fathers who are ford guys it shouldnt even be half to do this job. Thanks everyone =] Im Stephen by the way, im new on this forum.
----------
oh it is a v6 4.0L also, i believe it is an OHV not too sure

Re: Convert AUTO To Manual
lol thats funny i cant stand manual! fords great designed 5-speed sucks on the slave cylinders! replaced 3 already!! and i have to drop the trans every time! same amount as a new auto trans that goes out once every 100k if you abused it! if not they go longer! i say be happy with the auto because you dont want to have your ranger always in the shop for the same dam thing with thousands invested into it. but welcome! you can do the swap but you'll need quite a bit for it. easier and cheeper to get a new ranger with 5-speed already

THIS. Im so glad I didnt get a stick because of this exact reason. Automatics are the sheeeeut. No clutches to change and SHOULD last the life of the vehicle as long as you change the fluid early and often.
Ford says in my owners manual (unless im reading it wrong) to change it at 150k (the auto fluid that is). Aint no way that crazy shit is happening.
Every 25k is over kill but I believe its worth it for something I can do myself on the cheap that is excellent preventative maintenance.
If you really want a stick, just buy another truck with one already. much more simple that trying to swap one in.

I would make sure they aren't putting in shitty slaves. I enjoy having a manual truck. Not so much in traffic (which where i live there is close to none) But i like the control.
I haven't replaced the slave yet, 138k on the oem one, but it is starting to have a stubborn first gear every once and a while. I did however replace my clutch at 100k because it would slip under load.

Re: Convert AUTO To Manual
Everyone is different on clutches and how they use them. My '98 had it's clutch changed at about 183,000 miles and the slave just recently started to fail. This is in a suburban/rural area, so city traffic will beat a clutch more than where I'm at.
Where I live is also in the Appalachian Plateau, so there are a lot of hills to start on and wear the clutch more than someone on the plains would experience.
As far as doing a auto to manual conversion, it will be a lot of work and not cheap. You will need the transmission, and manual transmission fly wheel for the engine, the engine wire harness for a manual, the PCM for a manual, plus the master cylinder and reservoir, the boot and sub boot, the pedal assembly for both the clutch and the brake (the auto brake pedal is bigger), and the appropriate center console for a manual (this may or may not come with the shifter boot). I think that covers it.
It would probably be easier and cheaper to trade your truck for one with a stick already in it.

Re: Convert AUTO To Manual
You will also need the cpu for the manual transmission or else its going to throw a code saying your automatic transmission is missing.
And yeah, automatic transmissions have " Flex Plates " which are thinner and lighter than flywheels, which are found on manual transmissions.

Re: Convert AUTO To Manual
Auto to 5-speed swap begins....
Here I have already done this. Just omit the 4 wheel drive part.
It's actually pretty easy IMO if you know how to wrench.

You don't need the engine harness

Re: Convert AUTO To Manual
I hate manual transmissions because they distract me from drinking, texting, eating, and playing with my amateur radio equipment.
Just to damn inconvenient!!!!
