Default Shifter Bushings

Hello all,

Just recently bought a Ranger. The shifter is extremely sloppy...

It looks like it has an aftermarket shifter on it, but I'm not entirely sure. I know it has a B&M shifter knob on it for sure, but that's it.

My questions are:

1. How can I tell if the shifter IS aftermarket?
1a. If it is aftermarket, how do I find out which bushings I need?
1b. If it's NOT, I can just buy a kit for the model/year, right?

I'm concerned about this because the shifter feels loose when in gear and EXTREMELY loose while out of gear. (I understand shifters are generally loose when out of gear, but this one flops around when I hit bumps and things.)

Thanks in advance!

Post up a pic of your shifter for us. There's no way we can tell you if it's stock without seeing it. Also info on the truck would be helpful(year, engine, etc).

Alot of 'ricer' folks chop off the stock knob and put on a ghey aftermarket knob on it to make it look custom but it never fits right because stock shifters don't have threads...they got splines. Unless it's the uber rare chrome shifter off an Fx4.

Well, I looked it over this weekend...

My girlfriend also drives a Ranger, and it looks like the sticks are the same (with splines) as Fx4 pointed out. So, I think the shifter itself is still stock.

I see the eBay listing that's posted, but if I was to buy that, I'd have no idea how to replace it considering this is the first Ranger I've ever owned. Is it pretty simple? Also, are there any guides on the site here I can look at?

Thanks everyone.

It's pretty simple. I believe it must come with some form of instructions.

Remove the plastic floor bezel. Then on the bottom of the stock shifter there's a cam bolt...so take the nut off the pass side, put it on the left and start tightening it. it'll eventually pull the bolt out and release the shifter arm. After that, it's removing the 3 bolts on top of the transmission, then pulling up on the "stub" sticking out of the trans. Then disassemble the pivot ball assy and replace the old parts with the new. Reinstall. oh...and you don't really wanna drop anything down into the transmission like screws. lol.

Yeah, kinda figured the part about the screws.

So this can all be done from inside the cab? Sounds pretty easy compared to other things I've done in the past.

Thanks a lot for the advice.

I also had a couple of other questions. They aren't really related to the shifter though.

The truck misses somewhat when idling, and it also bogs down when trying to accelerate. My first thoughts were to replace the plugs and wires, along with the timing belt (since the previous owner had already bought a new one.) Am I headed in the right direction with these repairs?

EDIT: Oh, side note... The truck also makes a squealing noise when I rev the engine into high RPMs. This is mainly what prompted me to change the timing belt. Missing, bogging, squealing belt: Kinda screamed timing belt to me, but I could be wrong.
