I had an 89 BII with a similar problem so take this for what it's worth.
Manual shifter was loose/sloppy when engaged into any gear. There was a plastic bushing on the end of the shifter where it connected to the top of the trans. that had been completely worn through. Replaced the bushing and it solved my problem.
Again, this was on a BII and different year model.

It's a shifter bushing repair kit. Basically everything but the pivot ball gets replaced. It fixes loosey goosey sloppy shifters.

Again, score one for the walking encyclopedia of Rangers. I wish I knew 1/4 of what you have probably forgotten.

pictured is exactly what you need and can use and you can purchase it right there from that link. It's made for the Mazda M5od trans that you've got.

I have a 1994 ford ranger xlt, 3.0 v6, 5-speed, extended cab. I replaced the shifter bushings and now it won't shift out of gear. I was told that you are supose to put the truck in neutral before you replace the bushings, but I didn't know that until I already had the shifter out. So, how do I get it to shift gears now?
