Default Any Ideas on How to fix the Speedometer?

Alright, so I have a 1994 Ford Ranger, 5 spd, 2.3L engine. Ever since I've bought it the speedometer jumps and bounces up and down at speeds of around 45mph and higher and you can hear kind of a clicking noise. At first I tried lubricating the Speedometer Cable. That didn't work. So I bought a new speedometer cable and installed it and it still has the same problem. The plastic speedo gear that goes into the transmission looks like new. At this point I'm thinking it either has to be the Speedometer itself, the speed sensor, or possibly the gear in the transmission. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

well, i had the same symptom with the needle going haywire...but it was solely due to a bad sensor on top of the rear diff. on my truck

but i think your sensor is different than mine...just the same symptoms.

yes it is, because the 1994 used a mechanical speedometer, and the 1999 used an electronic, but thanks anyways

Are all of them on the rear diff?

Yeah, i thought it was the rear diff too, until one day my transfer case got bumped into neutral and my speedo read 15 mph and i wasn't going anywhere. I was all "wtf" and to make sure i wasn't seeing things, i put it 5th, let go of the clutch and it read 45 mph...

Only these Rangers base the Vehicle Speed calculation on the pulse frequency from the Rear Axle Sensor:

1998 all
1999 all
2000 all
2001 2.5L only

(Side note: All 89~09 Rangers have the Rear Axle Sensor and use it as an input to the ABS.)

I was just wondering, does the speed sensor actually determine what speed to put on the speedometer or is it just the cable? Would you think that the actual speedometer is the problem?

In 94, the speed sensor is used only by the PCM and speed control. The cable drives the speedometer. If you have eliminated everything else in the mechanical speedometer drive, then the speedometer itself might be the next logical place to look.

Thanks for the info. So I might replace my instrument cluster with another one from the junkyard though. I have a question though, my cluster unit currently doesn't have a tachometer. If I find a ranger with a cluster that has a tachometer will it work?
