Default Can't get out of 4L

I have a 2003 4.0 4wd with automatic trans. My first issue was months ago: I could not get it to switch into 4L. 4H is all I usually need anyway, so no big deal. I'm out of town for the last 2 snowstorms, so I tell my wife how to use 4wd to get around while I'm gone. When I get back, the truck is in 4L, and I can't get it out. I've only driven it back and forth 100 ft a few times, but that was on ice and gravel. If I can find some clear pavement, I'll try it on that. Question are: 1)Do these symptoms point to a particular failing component, and 2) What is the best way to help the transfer case shift. Thanks

first thing first. make sure your in Neutral with your foot on the brake not moving to shift out of 4L and into 4L...

if that doesnt work have someone in the truck doing that and tap the shift motor with a hammer. if it clicks then. it might need a cleaning or replacement.

here is the cleaning

my dad drove his f250 all aound the yard trying to get it out of 4lo when he first got it, you have to really press the brake to get it to engauge, at least you do on mine.

Park or Neutral will work and the brake must be pressed.

Mine got stuck once. After beating on the T-Case with a tire iron for a few minutes, it clicked. Never use excessive force. Get a bigger hammer.
