No Drive or Reverse
Hit a bump at high speed. Now when in D or R it wont engage. I can get it to move, but very slowly. It wont even crawl if I'm not on the accelerator. When shifted into 1 or 2 though everything works like normal. Linkage appears to be in tact (at the transmission end at least) and I can feel the shifter "settle" into each letter. All wires seem to be tight. What else can I check?

Re: No Drive or Reverse
See if you have any codes. Try disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it after about 2 mins to reset the PCM. If you are pulling codes, what are they?

Check your trans fluid.

I'm in the same boat and what is wrong is the centripical clutch is gone. Smell your trans fluid. Is it smells Burt then that's the problem bc the clutch is made of a paper material. Gonna need it rebuilt or a new trans. The clutch is only ingaged with reverse drive and 3rd gear. I drive in second then at about 45 shift to drive and it will skip third and go into over drive. That's how I drive mine daily. I'm working on getting a new trans for my 03 ranger right now to man.best of luck.

Re: No Drive or Reverse
Reset battery. No luck. In the process of getting my hands on a code reader.
Trans fluid is used car dealer full (like halfway up the dipstick). Looks a little dark/rust colored but smells clean.
Don't know if I should drop the valve body without a shop manual. Any suggestions?
Hoping its not any clutch. It was driving alright until it died on me. Although I did notice there is about 1/4" of non-corroded shaft sticking out of the back side of the trans.
And thanks for all your help so far. Although I don't like where this is going.

Something I forgot to mention you might want to drop the pan and inspect what is actually in the oil and the valve body/ gasket
The valve body is rather easy to replace or get to the gasket behind just do a search on Google and several helpful how-tos should come up basically the hard part is keeping up with the 10-20 something different sized bolts and where they go

Re: No Drive or Reverse
May want to buy a service manual off fleabay, the vb usually has a tightening sequence.
Also helps to have a diagram of what bolts go where.
Mine cost me like 9.99

Re: No Drive or Reverse
Here's a how to on the VB removal, gasket/separator plate repair and replacement :
http://www.ford-trucks.com/article/i...dy_Gasket.html
You might also consider pulling your VB, looking on EBay and getting yourself a reconditioned VB. This would probably run you $200-$300 or so, as opposed to buying a shift-kit and new solenoids, which would cost more. You'll most likely have to send your unit in as a core. Good luck
