I have had and have again the same year and tranny of truck you do. I have also tried almost every major brand of dex/merc in my tranny and will tell you this... for the price, none ever beat valvoline maxlife dex/merc for price, availability or performance. Your far beyond warranty amd thw valvoline meets or exceeds the requirements in your owners manual aka bible. Whatever your dad had you do or said was wrong. Drain it and refill it for less than $20.00 and sleep well at night with the valvoline from walmart. Always do what the manual says unless you are smarter than professional auto engineers. Nuff said.

I've got a m5od 1994, 2.3l, 209k. I swapped out the gear oil, with ATF that mets or exceeds MERCON. I was hoping for synthetic ATF because I live in Canada and it gets freezing cold here! I suppose it not to late. So my rear dif can take syn gear oil. 75w90?

It's not too late to put synthetic ATF in your tranny. Buy extra to flush that gear oil out of there.

Yes, put the gear oil in the rear.
