Default Grinding in 3rd and 5th gears

94 ranger 2.3L 4x2 manual 5speed. yep, grinding in 3rd and 5th. what could it be?

but why only in 3rd and 5th? 1,2,4,reverse, all fine. but cruising in 3rd or 5th gives me a steady grinding sound.

i had the same problem but with 1st and 2nd and it ended up being the gears goin out.... mite wanna look into that

207k miles so it could be a lot of things i suppose. really not looking forward to having to do transmission work =(

3rd & 5th gear may be on the same shaft inside the tranny - either way you're looking forward to tansmission work.

Find a tranny now. My old B2 never had a 5th, one day hammering gears in the boonies, I dropped second, fourth and reverse. Trying to find a gear was like rowing a boat. I drove that thing 40 miles in third, coasting through stop signs.

4th, and 5th are often the first to ge, when the clutch is going.....
