oh GOD yeah 4.10's would be a huge improvement! Both in mileage, power, AND driveability. If I were you, I'd look for a 4.10 geared axle and then swap it in. May even get lucky and find a limited slip axle. Could only be as little as $100 too.

OR...if you plan on maybe upping the size of the tire down the road, I'd suggest going to 4.30:1 gears. Doing that however, is going to be about $600 parts and labor.

I suggest taking a peek at www.car-part.com for a low-mile used 4.10 axle in your area. Newer 4cyl x-cabs and 4cyl reg cab autos have the same 7.5" rear axle you've got now, but with 4.10's. If you get an 8.8", which are more common as they're stock on 4x4's and most are 4.10, you'll be making a nice rear brake upgrade too...from 9" drums to 10" drums and people say it's a good performance upgrade. Limited Slip (LS) would be a nice upgrade too for those Northeast winters....and quite a bit of 8.8 4.10 axle are LS.

With the $330 plus labor, you'll be up and over $500 total out of pocket very easily. Low mile used axles can be priced from 100-300. I got my 30k used axle for 150.

Good luck with whatever you do choose to do. I hope I'm not coming off as though I'm preaching to you....that's not my intention. I'm just giving you other options to consider....I like the phrase "is the juice worth the squeeze". It's alot of what my logic was when building my truck. The way I look at it, if I'm going in to do work, I might as well see what my other options are to make the truck even better.

When I was looking to upgrade my axle to 4.10 gears. One quoted me 1K dollars most of that was all labor the parts were just about 400 dollars.

I used car-part.com and found a 2006 fx4 level II 4.10 L/S axle with 6,000 miles on it for 400. total investment was 500 after buying the fluid for it and new u bolts.

They didnt have an 8.8 with a ls so im going to chill with the 3.73 for know. I cut my floor mate it was messing with my gas pedal i cruise 75 no problem now so im going to wait. When i build i like to do shit once and right so i dont have to do it again so im going to wait for them to get the axle i want instead of settling. That is my new favorite part site now though.
