Default 89 ranger 5sp-2clunks upon every shift

My daughter has been driving my 89 ranger 5spd + upon me getting in it recently I heard 2 clunks upon every shift-I dumped the fluid today-it had fluid in it-dark-not burnt smelling. She took it to a ford dealership b-4 I came home + was told the trans was burnt up + needed a new one @ $2100 for the trans. The truck is prob not worth that-it has been a very dependable truck @ nearly 300k w/no major repairs + avg maintenance. My question is: What would be a good starting point to examine this? 2 clunks per shift-I assume it just started-I assume-no metal frags in the fluid-no noise in neutral.
Thanx for any help-she just got a job + I got a reduction in pay on mine. I will have to do this myself- I have a trans from an 87 Ranger-5spd but not the same trans-they look diff. I have #s E67A-7003 BC 106815 from the 87 + I also have E87A EG 517230 from the 89.

This help will determine my guessing game at a fix or swap w/the 87 trans if poss-the 87 is sound but I don't know if they are interchangable w/out mods
Thanx again Raroo

Ron, create a signature line with info on your truck, year , motor, trans, running gear and any thing else you care to tell us. We'll see what we can do to help you out. Manuals generally don't "burn" out, usually a clutch problem. I have trashed a tranny before and I only had 2 gears to get her home but she didn't clunk.

Default 89 ranger clunk

It is an 89 ranger XLT 4cyl 5spd-drain plug on drivers side- I believe Mazda-I thought about it tonight + recalled installing some 80-90 gear oil into it a couple of months ago. I remember this mostly because I had a real hard time getting the bottle up to the fill spot + used a small clear tube attached to the bottle to ensure I was filling it. I guess that was my 1st mistake- I assume I put no less that 1 quart in it-it must have been pretty low. This truck has nearly 300k on it w/only 1 clutch installed that I know of. No other REAL work done to it. I happen to have another trans from an 87 ranger trans-poss a Mitsubishi-it is a 5spd-came w/a 4cyl eng-not an XLT.
The trans had 2 clunk sounds per shift from 1 gear to another through all ranges-no noise in neutral-I have not been in the truck in awhile til the other day when she picked me up from work + I asked "What the ! is that". we drove home. She took it to a shop the next day+ was informed the rans was burnt up + it would be $2100.00 + the truck was not worth that much. Diagnosis fee paid out the door+ home. I found no metal except usual minor shavings on magnet.
Any help appreciated-my daughter has no where to go but here + I really can't help anymore since my job cut.
Ron

Sounds like you have a replacement trans, on hand. 4 cyl it should bolt up, XLT shouldn't mean anything as far as trans go. You KNOW the condition of the donor trans? Could be the clutch? Two clunks sounds like depress clutch, release clutch. Spend your time researching and diagnosing, clutch should be your starting point easiest to fix too.

Default 89 ranger clunks

I was about to dump some ATF in it so pulled the drain plug 1 more time -just to get the last drips out + behold a piece of metal which reminded me of a thrust washer like in the chevy's. this trans does not have a pan so I am unsure of whatever else may be in there. If I am not mistaken by what I've heard the Mitsu should bolt right up. Have I been told right? It has rained or snowed every single weekend here for at least 5 weeks now. I want to be able to get it done from start to finish w/in a weekend. Keep in mind the donor came from an 87-same eng size. If there is any sort of issue w/splines or mounts it would be helpful to at least have an idea up front.
Thanks again to all.

Two wheel drive? Break out the tape measure and crawl through the puddles. Double check everything, driveshaft, bolt patterns. Poke your head around with a flashlight, you should be prepared to do the clutch too, unless you wanna take it out again next year. Might be good, might be not. Get a manual and read the procedure before you touch a wrench.
