Dadgum Trans Won't Come Out
Alright fellas. 96 4.0. Doesn't seem to be enough clearance between the exhaust and firewall. Everything is removed but when I try to slide the trans back it just gets caught up. What's the secret?? I searched too btw...

Re: Dadgum Trans Won't Come Out
Its a lot easier to drop the crossover from the manifolds, undo it from the converter and get it out of your way. Before you go back with the trans it helps to fold the cab seam over to get a little more room for going back in.

Re: Dadgum Trans Won't Come Out
If I remember right, my dad and I undid the exhaust along the length of the truck and lowered it down, giving us just enough to get the transmission out. It was a pain in the ass for sure!

Re: Dadgum Trans Won't Come Out
Well, I got it out. It's the one on the right. The one on the left is going in now...
...and guess what I didn't take out!
Probably should've! It wasn't pretty but it came out. I went to remove the Y-pipe and the bolts were seized. I was outta Kroil and town is half an hour away. Did what I had to do. It's gonna come off though before the new one goes in for sure!
So my question now. What can I do to the new trans while it's out to make sure it lasts? Of course a new filter and fluid but what else? Maybe something I can do myself. Or should I have it checked out professionally? Thanks again fellas.

Re: Dadgum Trans Won't Come Out
uh, hope you diddn't end up constricting the Exhaust lines or cause a leak... I would have heated the bolts with a pen torch....
If the new trans doesn't include a valve body and you're swapping it you'll probably want to install a shift kit or buy updated valve body, New Upper/lower seperator gasket and replace the EPC solenoid.

Re: Dadgum Trans Won't Come Out
No the exhaust is fine. Just scratched a little. Would've heated the bolts with a pen torch too... if I had one.
And what does EPC stand for? Where can I get one? Thanks a bunch!

Re: Dadgum Trans Won't Come Out
I got the trans from a private seller. Came outta a 96 Explorer with about 150k. He said it worked fine when pulled (of course) but I didn't want to sell the truck and have someone come knockin' down my door if the trans didn't last.
Thanks for the link BTW!

Re: Dadgum Trans Won't Come Out
Well... Now the new one won't go in. I get the converter bolts through the flywheel and that's about it. I made sure the converter is engaged, unless I'm doing it wrong. Should the converter move around just a bit when it's engaged? I mean up and down and side to side? I get the bellhousing right up to where the dowels are barely not to the holes. I even said to heck with the jack and tried to muscle it in but no luck. Thanks for some help!!

Re: Dadgum Trans Won't Come Out
sounds like the converter may not be seated right....try spinning and pushing it...if its not seated it will seat

Re: Dadgum Trans Won't Come Out
Thanks for the video. But now I'm pretty sure it's seated right. The main thing that was bothering me was how it moved around after it was seated but towards the end he jiggles it a bit and that's about how mine moves. Another thing is the trans is out of an Explorer. As far as I could tell they were identical but I didn't measure anything. It seems to me the stubby (I don't know what it's called) on the end of the converter isn't going into the hole in the flywheel. Possibility? Thanks again.
