Default (TSB)Technical Service Bulletin - Ranger driveshaft thump/clunk

Here is the actual Ford Ranger specific TSB in detail to solve your clunk, thump, thunk driveline vibration problem. It applies to all years of Rangers:

Is this just for autos, because when I shift and put a load on or off the driveline, there's a clunk noise coming from which sounds like the sli joint, just curious because it doesn't do it off a complete stop but between the gears especially first and second?

There is some play in the differentials that will cause a clunk in vehicles with manual transmissions when the pressure from the engine is released. I get it in both of my trucks as well. However, that is not to say the above TSB doesn't apply to you as well. It won't hurt to check it out and make sure the clunk you hear is the normal differential clunk or if it is the driveshaft clunk.

I don't think you're vehicle is going to fall apart, but TSB's are similar to recall's and are performed by the dealer free of charge. Why not take care of a problem that doesn't cost you money?

So the dealer will fix it for free?

Tsb`s are not fixed free. They are to aid Techs. in diagnosing problems. Recalls are performed free.

I think you are partly right. If the vehicle is still under warranty then the TSB is "done for free", but if the vehicle is out-of-warranty, then, the dealer can charge for the repair. I am 97% sure that the dealer fixed a TSB issue for me at no cost when the vehicle was new and serviced for something else.

Right, if under warranty it`s a free fix. Sorry I didn`t make that clear.

New to list - bear w/ me please.

I recently inherited a 1999 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0LV6 2 WD w/ auto trans. which also "clunks" sometimes in its driveline. Fixed about 30% after new ATF and new synthetic lube in rear end....
-My Question - I don't seem to have any "boot" or "spring as shown in this TSB print-out (it printed out only partially by the way....2 images and no words?).

-Can someone re=upload this article RE: driveshaft clunk......does it apply to my 2 WD Ranger as spec. above?

-Where on this forum does one find Ford Ranger Torque # - I just changed ATF filter and wanted the 9/10 mm filter bolt torque more than I wanted the 10-16 ft.# torque I did find for the STF pan bolts....where to do for that filter torque #?

Thanks in advance for any help you might offer
