Default 2002 ford ranger stalling from nuetral into drive

i have a 2002 ford ranger, trans shifts good when it's working right, but it's been starting to stall after going about 40mph, starts back up fine when you try to shift into drive it stalls, reverse works ,you have to go into reverse for a few feet (sometimes)then drive will be ok, but you can smell electrical burning, i have read on here something about problems in the tilt, mine has a problem the turn signals only work when it's in full upright tilt---so just hoping someone has the answer to my problem let me know thanks gary
