Rear differential fluid

Plan on changing the rear diff fluid. But i dont have an ownrs manaul. What type of gear oil and brand shld i use?

Mine is a 96 and called for 5 pints of 80-90W gear oil. It is the 8.8 rearend. I used the store brand. I'm sure there is better oil out there.

Ford uses 75w140 in the back diff now.

You're both right, the LSD is serviced with 75W140 with 4Oz of friction modifier, the open diff calls for 80W90, most Ford dealers service both with 75W140.

Also easy way to tell what diff you have is to
Look on your door tag, should specify axl then just google for a chart.

In addition if i recall from memory it was rarer for post 2000 fords to use open ended so you probably want to look up your axle code and make certain.

Open differentials were still the most common right up until the end.

From reading through this I am realizing that I probably should've put in 75–140 not 75–90. I have a 01 with the 4.0 5speed and its a XLT. Opinions would be appreciated. Should I replace it or is it okay?

My rule with gear oil goes as follows; Every 2 years or whenever water gets into it. Changing mine in 2 weeks time, replacing the cover with a new one and filling it with 80W90 Valvoline High-Performance conventional.

My truck is a 2004 L/S rear and I made the mistake of not using the Motorcraft L/S additive and oil and my truck had a binding issue in the RE after the fluid change..Took it back to the shop they changed it again same thing then I spent the $50 for 3 qts of Motorcraft oil and The MC L/S now my Ranger is back to normal...No binding and I'm a happy camper..Another thing when they put the MC stuff in I had them pull the driveshaft for shits and giggles and they found the u-joints had one frozen and one worn...
