I'm considering buying a 96 Ranger w/ 4.0 V6, standard tranny, 4x4 reg cab. I've always owned Rangers (91, 93, 89) so I know the usuals to look at--never owned a 96 or the 4.0 v6 so I thought I'd ask if anyone has found any issues specific to this year or this engine? Thanx fo any imput.

Well other than the leaf spring mount brackets, just look over it pretty well for rust, broken suspension parts etc. The 4.0 engines are usually pretty good, but they do tend to have top end knock around 120k. Just use your best judgment and don't go paying more than $3000 for a 96. I paid $1500 for a 95 with 119k and a couple minor fixes. Good luck!

Thanx Steve, He's had it up for sale for about 6 weeks now--he started out at $2,500. It caught my eye back when it was $2,500 but I thought that was too much so I waited and figured if he sells it oh well, if he comes down to a better price, Ill check it out.... its a standard and 4x4. He says it only needs a brake job and has an engine light on. He said he hooked it up and can't get a code? Of course they always look better in pictures and seem better when being described by their owners on the phone...Going to check it out on Friday morning. Figured if its decent, I'll offer him $1,400. He might do it seeing he's been trying to sell it for 6 wks : )
