Question Going from 4.10 gear to 3.56 because of bigger tires harmful?

I have stock 27" (225's) according to the gear formula
(Original tire divided by New tire size x axel gear)

So 27 divided by 31 = .8709677 multiplied by my factory 4.10 = a new ratio of 3.57

Now I know 3.73 is IDEAL but is 3.57 bad?

I feel like Im wasting fuel with these oversized 4.10's but will I be wasting any more with 31'' tires (and a new apparent ratio of 3.57)?

BOTTOM LINE-
I do not want to hurt damage or strain my 2.3 in any way, fuel economey makes no difference to me

If you want it to be easier on your engine, quicker acceleration, keep the 4.10.s (if you are getting 31's

There is no reason to gear higher.

edit: i read it wrong my bad i see what you did there. you should be fine with 4.10's and 31's on the 2.3. it wont be powerful but it would get you to A to B just fine. but if it feels gutless and you want the power back you could gear to 4.56's and would be good.

Yeah youre going backwards. 3.57 is not a lower ratio than 4.10. If you want to offset the larger tires 4.56 is the number to shoot for. To answer your question, no it wont hurt your truck to re gear to the appropriate gear ratio in fact it will relieve the strain of the larger tires on your drivetrain to gear lower. It should put you back in the stock RPM range so your engine isnt lugging all the time.
