Problems With 4 wheel drive
94 Ford Ranger 4x4 V6 4.0L automatic locking hubs (push button) 4x4
It recently took my ranger out and put it in 4 wheel drive, when doing so after about fifty feet I heard a loud clunk. And it keeps on clunking as I drive it more. (You can feel it also) like the 4x4 is engaging and disengaging. Or something like that. It drives fine out of 4x4.
Please help,
Thanks - Tim

Re: Problems With 4 wheel drive
What terrain where you on when you put it in 4x4?? This may or may not be your issue----> In addition to the clunk, do you also have flashing 4x4 light? On my 89 Ranger I've gotten the clunk and flashing 4x4 light and on my visor is a manufacture sticker that says its an "improper range shift" when this occurs. The solution listed is to get the truck back into the gear it was in before the improper range shift occurred. I've had to do this a few times with my truck. It sounds horrid like there is a major issue, but when corrected the clunking goes away. There is another option to fix it which I don't want to try and quote without going and reading it off the tag.... Don't know if this is your issue--thought I'd post it encase cause if it is this is an easy solution.

Re: Problems With 4 wheel drive
No the 4x4 light does not flash. It does the same on street or dirt. I did put a new shift motor in it awhile back because the 4x4 stoped working.
now it works but with the clunking noise.

Auto hubs or manual? Auto hubs may not be engaging properly.

Do you have a bad cv joint? I know my driver side one is bad, and I read that they can cause the wheel not to engage, creating that loud clunk. I have the same noise with mine. Sometimes on a perfectly flat straight surface it does engage and there is no clunk
