Default Transmission is leaking ATF.

So i was going down the road and started smelling something burning. I pulled over and saw that it was ATF burning on the exhaust. The fluid was coming out of where the bellhousing bolts to the engine. I assumed it was the front seal. I have the transmission out right now and the seal seams to be good but im not sure. On the old seal there is a gap between the seal and the shaft on the transmission, Not sure if theres suppose to be a gap. Any other places where ATF could be leaking out of. There is a crack on the shaft. Could that be it? Picture of crack ---> http://uploadpie.com/zoGDm

Was it driving rough? Had this same incident a few weeks ago and turns out I had overheated the trans. Leaking in a steady stream in the same place. After sitting over night the leak was gone and haven't seen it since.

There should be enough room between the shaft and seal for the nose of the convertor to go back in to engage the oil pump. Put some ATF on the nose so the seal isn't dry on start up.

That part of the shaft that is Chipped off is now inside of the Convertor, at some point it may get lodged and lock up the convertor. Good luck if you don't replace it, but now that you have the tranny out you may want to.

I had to keep driving it while ATF was leaking out and it was less than a pouring out but more than just dripping. I could notice it slipping the more i drove. Im positive that it was ATF. But would that crack cause ATF to leak everywhere?

If your talking about that "Chip" on the Stator shaft then NO, it's deep inside of the converter. More than likely it was your seal on the oil pump housing. Like I said on my last post ,that "chip" that came off is now inside the converter and may lock it up at some point. You could try and get it out by dumping the oil in it and hope for it to come out with the oil. I would recommend getting at least a rebuilt converter.
