Default Manual Transmission Problem

Hi, I have a 94 ranger 2.3l with a manual 5 speed transmission. I have a problem with it that I have no clue how to address. When the engine is running it will not come out of gear. If I sit with the engine off I can move it from gear to gear but when I start it I can not shift out of the gear that it is in. I can start it in reverse and it will move or I can start it in 1st gear and it will move but I can not change the gear. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if I need a whole new transmission. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Slave cylinder or Master cyl. Clutch is not fully disengageing. Pretty common problem.

If you want to, learn how to "float" the gears. What you have to do is match you speed to your gears. For example, in my semi, I shift out of gear at 1500 rpm, and into the next gear at about 12-1300 rpms, no clutch needed. There is a point where you have your foot on the gas taht you should be able to maintain speed and pull it out of gear to the next one, same thing for down shifting. Let the rpm's fall to where you'd downshift and you should be able to push it out of gear into the one you want.

I drove my truck a week clutchless.....slave was gone and HAD to make it to work and back. Drove it 4 days like that til I had the weekend to finally replace the slave. It really ain't that hard....Rangers are difficult to do it into 2nd and they're difficult when using a hurst shifter.

My truck doesn't like shifting clutchless. The Ghia on the other hand, was easy.

yeh, sounds like your hydraulic clutch system.

check the fluid level, its gonna be on the firewall near the brake master cylinder.

if you have a bad master or slave, the clutch master cylinder is located under brake master cylinder and connected to the clutch pedal.

the clutch slave cylinder is located either inside or outside the transmission. outside ones are easy to change, inside ones are not, you have to pull the transmission to get it.

I have a 99 ranger 3.0, sometimes it is difficult to put into gear. After pumping the clutch or rolling a little, I am able to shift into gear and be on my way. Is this a sign of a bad clutch or something else?

try bleeding the clutch system. it can fix lots of problems.

heres how i do it- take the cap off the resivor and check the fluid level. use dot 3 brake fluid to top it off if needed. get under the truck and locate the bleeder. mine is on the drivers side about half way up the tranny behind [what would be the bell housing]. my bleeder needs an 8mm box end wrench to crack it open. put about a foot if clear plastic fuel line on the bleeder so you can see the fluid/bubbles coming out and to keep from making a mess. have another person to pump the clutch slowly about 3 times then hold it to the floor. then you crack the bleeder open for about a second or 2. as soon as the fluid stops coming out close the bleeder. repeat until you get a steady stream of clean fluid a couple times in a row. be sure to check the resivor frequently.
