Default 4x4 bang in reverse

I have a 98 ford ranger 5 speed and today i was driving along and needed to go real slow so i put it in 4x4 low and when i went to take it out it went to 4x4 high and then acted like it was in 2 wheel drive. I parked it and when I got back in, I put it in reverse and it started banging and locking up and killed it. I started it back up and it had no problems going forward and shifting but it has a rattle in the front end like a drive shaft does with a bad U-joint but I dont think the U-joints are bad. When I was driving home the 4x4 high and 4x4 low lights kept blinking. What do you guys think is wrong?

I think your VPH locking hubs went dude. the shaking can be caused by the hubs being locked and the front axle spinning when you have it in 2wd. And it's been known to happen. If you can with the truck in 2wd jack the front end up. and try to turn your front tires of they put up any resistance your hubs are either partway locked or locked all the way when there not supposed to be.vacuum pulse hubs VPH by ford was a epic fail over time the lines break and the hubs sieze. and if it is your hubs doing a auto to manual hub conversion is easy

Well I'm not Certain that is the problem. But if it's is. yes manual hubs are easy just turn the knob to the locked position on each wheel hub when your about to use 4 wheel drive high or low. in 2hi leave the hubs unlocked. having them locked in 2hi can result in damage to the transfer case and bad fuel economy. but all this aside your problem may be something other than hubs. I was just suggesting that it could be a possibility and if in the event that your hubs do fail fixing the problem will take 30 mins max. it evolves jackin the front wheels off the ground removing the tire and wheel. removing a c ring and pulling the old hub out and sliding the new manual hub in. I recall someone doing a conversion and spending maybe 30-50$. best get it checked by a pro though. once the problem is diagnosed further help can be given

Lol maybe 30 bucks for a set. there not really expensive. but have you further investigated the problem. cause if it's not your hubs id hate to lead you to spending money on something that's not the problem

Its an improper range shift when the 4x4 light flashes and you get the clunk clunk. My 89 Ranger has the correction on the visor of my truck and I've had to do this with my truck....will go out and right it down for ya....its just stuck unless you drove it like that....back in a few...

----------

Keep in mind these are instructions for an 89 with your issue and may change with a newer model. Its a factory sticker on my visor and I've done this to correct the flashing 4x4 light and the clunking: "An improper range shift will cause the low range light to flash (I have had both flash) and will continue to flash until the PRIOR SHIFT position is reselected or the above procedure followed" This is the above procedure they're referencing: "To shift to of from 4L stop vehicle and shift auto trans into neutral or disengage clutch on manual trans before pushing low range button (this truck's 4x4 is push button on dash). I had to do it over a few times once before I got the right sequence but it worked. There must be similar directions for your truck somewhere....not to worrying about the clunking unless you drove it like that--that will go away when you get it unstuck.

----------

My truck once got stuck in park when this happened cause I pulled over and put it in park--yikes....I had to really pull, lean into it with all my weight to get it out of park to be able to then get it into neutral to do this procedure. If both lights are flashing (h/L) ignore the high.
