Default worn rack in the rack and pinion

Part of the rebuild in my Ranger is replacing the rack and pinion. The reason I am replacing it is because I was told there was too much wear in the rack to allow the the front end to be aligned. It does feel pretty sloppy too.

Other than that, the steering is ok. There are no leaks or anything and all the boots are in good shape.

So I guess I have a couple of questions:
1. Does this sound correct?
2. Is there a simpler fix than replacing the entire unit?

At least it's right up front where you can get to it instead of buried back behind the engine.

The diagnosis they gave you sounds right as long as the inner and outer tie rod ends check out ok. You could try to rebuild it but I don't know if it would be any cheaper and it certainly wouldn't be simpler.

I will have another look at it before I do anything rash. All of that hangy-down stuff needs to get replaced regardless, since it is still original-at least I can't remember changing it - but you know how that goes.
