Default Weird overdrive problem

Just bought an 89 ranger 4x4 auto. Truck runs good but if it's stopped or driving at low speeds the OD will not engage and it acts like its in neutral. On the freeway it will shift into OD but as soon as I slow down it acts like its in neutral again. Could this be from dirty fluid or is there a problem with the solenoid? Thanks

Matt

Most overdrives only work at speeds over 55, the problems you're having could be from what you ask, or it may be ready for a rebuild, is the oil red or brown, does it smell burnt?

How many miles on the truck? Being a former ford tech I can tell you that a transmission flush might not be a bad idea. They also make additives for transmission that could help. But like the other guy said od or what they also call torque converter clutch lock up doesn't occur until your at a cruising range typically around 55mph. But can also occur before hand for fuel efficiency.

The truck has a lot of miles on it 186k if it's only rolled over once. Could it be a bad brake switch? Thanks for the input

Torque converter might be going bad or the tranny needs some new fluid. I would NOT high pressure flush it or even flush it for that matter. Drain it and put new fluid in.

I work for ford and there is no issues with flushing a trans that has that problem. NO ONE high pressure flushes transmissions. You disconnect the lines to the cooler and team the engine which will make the fluid flow from the cooler to the machine, the machine collects the old fluid and puts new fluid back into the trans hence disconnecting both cooler lines. Return and supply!
