Default What to replace while it's open?

I've been having some issues with the manual transmission in my 97 Ranger with the 2.3L. Primarily, the issues show up when the truck has been run for a little while... About 20+ mins. Anyway, what'll happen is The clutch will suddenly start feeling strange... Kinda spongy. This will be followed shortly by a very slow reengagement of the clutch which makes it difficult to accelerate. Intermittently the clutch pedal will also feel really hard and nearly impossible to push. If I kick it a few times it'll usually release again. So, after talking to some mechanic friends, I feel like the truck is in need of a new clutch.

I've done a bunch of research, and I'm going to attempt this job myself. I'm thinking of going ahead and replacing the slave cylinder too since I'll already have the tranny off.

So, two questions for y'all... Have any of you had problems similar to mine? If so, what was the ultimate problem and resolution? Also, since I'm going to be getting into all of this, is there anything else I should plan on doing? Would you suggest replacing the master cylinder and/or hydraulic lines? How about the flywheel?

Thanks for your input and suggestions!

Haven't had any of your problems so far, but have replaced clutches many, many times. I would suspect that your slave cylinder is going out. Are you loosing clutch fluid? How many miles on the clutch?

Basic rule of thumb on these trucks, don't try to save a few bucks. If you're going to replace the clutch, replace the slave cylinder, and release bearing as well. Also make sure your clutch kit comes with a new pilot bearing, if not, get one. It will save you a lot of headaches down the road.

If you replace the clutch, release bearing, pilot bearing and slave cylinder, and still have your listed problems, the only thing left is the master cylinder, and it can be replaced without pulling the transmission.

As far as the flywheel is concerned, it's a hard call until you actually look at it. Severe cracks, badly burned or gouged flywheels should be replaced. But until you get it all apart you won't be able to tell.

If you need more help or info, just shout. Someone here should be able to help.
