Default 4wd not engaging

hi, i have a 1988 ranger 2.9L v6. my 4wd is not engaging. i have the electronic 4wd button on the ceiling. it does have power going to it, because it lights up and makes the click sound when you push it. only problem is its not engaging.... the truck was leaking water from the sides of the roof due to rust about a month ago when it stopped working. i have fixed the holes so i no longer have roof leaks. my dad thinks that its the module in the dash that isnt functioning but im not quite sure if thats it or what... i inherited the truck from my dad about a year ago, and hes been a machanic for 30 years so he pretty much knows all bout it, lol... the problem is, hes never had this problem before... when he got the truck and it was about 2 years old, the transfer case broke twice and he had it replaced twice. i would hope that a ranger forum could help me lol

thanks - justin

eww...Yah def these people are the best..... But since I'm the first one to post, your SOL for a few more minutes lol. umm, so that means your running a shift motor on the T-case? If so I would either pull it to clean contacts, or replace it. Thats what I did for my 98 to work....But I dunno bout the 88 setup......
Also, is there a relay, or fuse in the electronic end of it?

Like I said, I dunno the 88 setup.

Hey, Justin. I'm not too familiar with push button 4X. My references show yours to be all electric. This system consists of a push-button control, an electronic control module, an electric shift motor with an integral shift position sensor and a speed sensor. I'd start at the switch and pull and clean it just like Chris said. Just cause the lights on and it goes click don't mean it's working right. If that don't do it just follow it down, checking for connection and power. I still don't mind gettin' out and lockin' my hubs, I KNOW they're locked in.
