Driveshaft Won't Come Off??
So I'm trying to help out my brother-in-law by replacing the transmission in his Ranger. He tells me it's a '98 so I find one at a good price and take it out. BUT, the driveshaft won't come off the trans. I had to pull the trans with the driveshaft attached and then while it was out, I beat out the U-joint. Still have this dang driveshaft yoke stuck to the trans though. What gives?
While we're all here... Turns out his truck isn't a '98 but a '96. Cool. So I know a '98 trans won't fit but what years will? It's an auto and a 4.0 by the way. Thanks for any and all help fellas!!

Re: Driveshaft Won't Come Off??
95-96
It was upgraded in 97.
Sounds like you need a BFH to tap some love into the yoke to get it to slide off.

Re: Driveshaft Won't Come Off??
Thanks for the reply. So it is supposed to just slide off? I beat on it pretty good... Maybe I'll break out the sledge. Thanks again!

Re: Driveshaft Won't Come Off??
What about Explorers? I found a '97 Explorer trans for a steal. Would it work??

Re: Driveshaft Won't Come Off??
97 is the first year of the change, so no.

Maybe some liquid wrench a lead face hammer could break it loose

Re: Driveshaft Won't Come Off??
I decided I wouldn't start a new thread so I'll just make this my "transmission fix" thread. Well, I picked up a trans from a '96 Explorer 4.0L. It's the same trans right? Problem is, I can even start getting the trans outta the truck. I'm trying to get the crossmember off and the two bolts on either side (the ones that go through the bushings) won't come out. They turn freely, kinda, and the nuts came off fine but I tapped on 'em and they didn't come out. I beat on 'em, I put the air hammer to 'em, nothin'. I put a jack under the crossmember to take any stress off the bolts. Nothing. Do I have to resort to a grinder or is there some secret?
Still haven't got the yoke off the other tranny by the way...

Re: Driveshaft Won't Come Off??
The bolts sit in a metal sleeves to keep from crushing the crossmember when you tighten. If they wont come out cut the heads off.
