Default 5R55E Buzz when cold

Hello,
My transmission makes a buzzing, almost a cavitation, noise at start up in the mornings and after it has sat for a few hours. It seems to be worse when the ambient temperature is low (40's).

The sound is temporarily muted as I move the shifter from P to R to D. This noise goes away nearly completely after a mile or two. There are no shifting issues either up or down. No leaks. Fluid looks fine and has no burnt odor. The noise is there without the serpentine belt.

My theory is that it has something to do with the filter / pickup tube.
Any thoughts?

Thanks

It could be that the fluid is thicker and causes the noise when its cold and when the fluid is stirred up and warmer it stops. Other than that I'm stumped.

you describe almost exactly what happens to mine (manual though) on cold mornings. the sound goes away shortly, and is temporarily muted as I clutch it. i never worried since it comes back every winter, and leaves every spring.

basically what he said^^^

This is a classic case of some restriction in the intake of the trans oil pump. Changing the trans oil filter, and attaching gakets would be a good place to start. Could be a cracked valve body gasket too. Good luck.

Two things here, one you didn't mention your ATF level, top that off, I would change your fluid and filter if you haven't done it in recent history. Two, is this mostly a cold morning thing? Because when I was in Montana, mine did the same thing with the correct fluid level, I just let the truck idle till the truck stopped squealing.

Thanks for the replies.
The ATF is about right in the middle of the hash marks (normal operating temp, level ground, & P).
I purchased the truck in late Jan. so changing all fluids are in the works. Coolant and oil already done. Driveline is next including ATF and filter.
It is not only during cold mornings. Just louder and takes longer to go away when it is in the 40's or below. Still there when I get off work but it goes away in about an 1/8 to 1/4 mile.

I'm hoping that changing the filter and fluid will take care of it.
Now off to search for the best way to change the fluid.

I cheated, I went to the dealer lol, otherwise, unless you install a bong to drain the fluid, you must remove the pan, and this won't get all the fluid this way, just what's in the transmission body, this doesn't get the torque converter or what's heading up the the cooler on the front of the truck. But you can take the line from your oil cooler, find suction, and the return line, place a 5 gallon bucket (clean obviously) on one side with ATF in it, and the return line in another bucket to catch the dirty ATF, turn the truck on and run it till she's clear. I don't know capacity specs for these trucks. That you will need Ford for, but that is the best way to do it.
