Thumbs up transmission reverse question

i have a 98 ranger 2x4 short cab short bed 4 cyl. i lost reverse. i just quit one day this fall. no slipping or odd sounds first just simply put it in reverse and it wouldnt go anywhere. i havent got the money to replace the trans and have been trying to find a dead truck to get one from. i had a friend say that there may be a computer problem. what is the name of the unit that controls the reverse and how hard would it be to replace? would a junkyard unit do the trick or am i looking at an expensive item? its gotta be cheaper than replacing the trans. would a computer check at an auto parts store help diagnose my problem? thanks for the help.

I'm pretty sure it's called a servo IIRC. But don't Quote me. And yes it is very expensive to replace because of the position. At least that's how it is in my 3.0
