Default 4x4 problem

I have a 94 xlt 4x4, 4.0 ltr. When I lock it into 4 wheel drive, it makes a loud clunking sound in the front end. while moving, it will keep doing this randomly. sometimes very quickly and others not so quickly. I only lock it in while driving on snow or dirt. Also when I unlock it, it starts to make a grinding noise like its not completely disengaging. but if I stop and back up about 10ft, it will quit. any ideas would really help. thanks

More than likely its the crap hubs crapping out. Get some manual hubs on there and never look back.

some vehicles require you to back up 10 - 20 feet to fully disengage the 4x4

I had the same on a Toyota hilux, I put it down to axle wind up and reversing a bit used to help it out of 4wd.
It was made worse by a nearly empty rear back axle caused by a leaking pinion oil seal.
