Default 99 ranger pvh hub failure question

Before i start, my ranger has 115,000 miles with original hubs and it also has the manual hub conversion to bypass the vacuum system(some people will know what im talking about). So i went to the coast this week and was camping. As i was leaving camp i heard a loud clunk and spring sound and got out to see that my driver side hub lock (plastic black piece) sheared right in half inside the hub. So ford wanted $200 bucks so i called a local junkyard and got a steal on a whole new hub and pvh system for $65 out of a truck with 13,000 miles. So what im getting at here is, was it more stressful for me to be locking and un-locking the hubs all the time, or leaving them locked in. Cause i've been doing some research and can't find much about people just leaving them locked in constantly and not worrying about them, which is what i'd like to do if it doesn't cause to much stress to the system. So any help or thoughts are welcome, thanks.

locking and unlocking has no effect on durability. You could leave them locked in, it wont hurt anything

I was hoping you'd chime in, i thought you did the manual hub conversion too? well i heard it causes extra stress to the cv shaft bearing, because on a live axle setup their held in by the bolt on the outer shaft. Do you know if thats true or not. I love the reliability of a live axle

The 98-00 axle is held in place by a neoprene snap ring, inside the hub at the back. IMHO, its not very srong to hold the axle in place. Without it (one of mine is gone) the axle can and will pull of ot the hub, enough to disengage from the lock out This I imagine can/will and does cause problems with the lockout.

The 01+ have the nut bolting the axle right to the hub, a much more solidly built setup.

You should check to see if you have the plastic snap ring. Also, perhaps somone makes a steel replacement...

Yeah, when my hub cap broke off, all the gears fell out and i saw that back there. Well i'll have to look around for a steel one. I just want to make sure i dont cause premature failure to a part by leaving the axles engaged.

I eventually want to add lockouts to my truck. I had them on my R50 Pathfinder to save wear on my CV's I didn't get a mileage gain, but not having to replace CV's because of a cheap lift was nice.

I just got and install my manual locking hubs and took them out wheeling the other this weekend, best $135 I've ever spent.

Ideally, I'd like a set of Warn Premiums. They don't make them for the truck though. I don't want any plastic crap. I'll have to run by and chat with them. We make prototype components and fixtures for them on occasion.
