Default new axle??

so i have found a axle out of a ford ranger it is a 8.8 rear end with limited slip and 3.73 gears a drum brakes.. so anyways before i buy it i want to know what i should look for to make sure its a good set up and won't wear out or something after i put it in... what should i look for?? and yes it will be a direct swap for my axle because mine is a 8.8 open with 3.73 gears...

Why are you even considering a 3.73 replacement axle? Judging by your avatar, you'll be running larger tires eventually. Look for a 4.10 LS axle instead.

At 60K, you should be good. Check the diff fluid to make sure there hasn't been any water in it, and look at the ring gear for any signs of abnormal wear.

My axle came out of an Explorer with 96K on the clock, and everything inside it was in excellent shape.

I know that...I'm just saying, your doing it just for the LS. okay. Seems foolish if you lifted your truck you gonna put bigger tires on it. Why not go all the way and get a better gear ratio now instead of not liking the way the truck drives once those tires are on? You see where I'm coming from? Get what I'm sayin'?

*btw...front axles are pretty plentiful and can be had for $100. I got my 30k used 4.10 one for 75. And if you can change out a rear axle, you can take out the front axle.

Like said above, pop the cover off and take a look at the condition of the gears, the spiders. Inspect every tooth for a chip or crack. Maybe pull the axle shafts too to inspect the splines and the center pin in the carrier. See how much backlash there is....hold the ring gear in place and rotate the pinion. should just be a tiny bit of slop. see how tight the LS is.....at 60-75k, the LS starts to show wear and stops acting like an LS and starts acting like an open. Have a buddy hold a wheel flange while you try to spin it. If it's hard and difficult to turn, good. Nice and tight LS. At only 60k, the only wear visible should be some LS wear.

I'll stop cluttering the thread now.

no worries man i understand where you are coming from. its just where i live i have to drive like 150 or more miles to even get close to a junk yard or anything and rangers around here usually don't break it sucks i know. its just i found a ls rear end that will work for now its pretty cheap since i know the guy so if i do get it it will help through this winter cause i have a limited traction cause of the ice. but i probably will get 4.10s later.
