Issues with my new truck. transfer case?
So here's the deal. I recently got a new ranger (new to me). I've had my 2004 2.3 2wd for a few years now and love it. No problems, just decided to get something with a little more power. My new truck is a 2003 xlt 4.0 4wd. Its an awesome truck, runs really well, but there is a problem somewhere in the drivetrain that has got me a little worried. The first time I noticed it was driving home from buying it. It was snowing pretty hard on the pass back to my house, and I put it in four wheel drive. Every quarter mile or so there was kind of a jarring motion as if the front wheels were catching up with the back. I noticed that the front tires were slightly more worn than the back, and know this is a major no no with 4wd. I don't really notice the sensation when I'm in a lot of snow, getting unstuck or other situations where the wheels slip quite easily. The other symptom is a sound that it makes at low speed. It is a sort of clunking. Almost sounds like whatever is spinning the loose object clunks down until its at the top then clunks down again. There is no real vibration while driving, and I haven't noticed that it occurs more while turning one way or the other. I'm not sure if it could be my hubs, but I'm a little worried its something in my transfer case. There's no grinding or anything just the clunk and jarring sensation. Any advice or help would be awesome. Love my ranger and I don't like to see her hurt.
