hard to get in gear sometimes
I noticed that if I put the truck in neutral and release the clutch pedal, that when I push in the clutch and attempt to put it in gear that it does not want to go into gear. Some people have said to try pumping the clutch a few times, but that does not help, fluid in the rez was a little low. I found out that if I shut the truck off then restart it I can get it to go into gear, also found that revving the engine a little will allow it go into gear as well. I hear a lot of people say that it sounds like the slave cyl might be starting to go. I hear no strange noises, don't have any problems going through the gears once I'm moving, and the truck is not trying to move with the clutch pedal pressed in.

Re: hard to get in gear sometimes
There's already been a post about this "problem." Its a couple of pages back, so you can search for it.
The gist of it was that this is common and its just a thing with the 5 speeds. My 2.3 does it sometimes when stopped, and I get around it by either putting it in 3rd first, then moving over to 1st, or if I'm on a hill, let the truck roll a tad while pushing the stick into 1st.
Top off your fluids, though.

Re: hard to get in gear sometimes
Yes, I know of the post you are speaking of, I believe the general consensus was to put it into 2nd before putting it back in first. However, this does not help my problem. I did top off the clutch fluid rez. It'll also grind if I try to put it into reverse but only when it's not wanting to go into any forward gear.

So I've heard. Is it something you have to do every few years or is it just the original slave that is the problem?

Its really just more of a ford design problem and alot of times its just hit and miss. There are plenty of people that have had it go early and premature, and others it has last a long time. For instance my 06 is like 84,000 miles and mine is fine, but my friends 05 that I work with has 82,000 and he just had to have it replaced. Its really just the luck of the draw. But if you get a high quality replacement piece, you should be good to go from there on out.

Re: hard to get in gear sometimes
Lol my contour has the same style slave cylinder like my 2 rangers the all in one crap, I have replaced the contours 4 times , 3.0 ranger 2 times, and the 4.0 1 time.. To me its like changing the oil, do it with my eyes closed when the slave in the 4.0 went out full replacement was 2 hours
