Re: floor mounted automatic shifter
Okay...what a day!
I got the shifter delivered middle of last week. Didnt have much time to do anything with it until Friday. Got the first mock up done, only to find out I really dont like the stock placement.
So, started looking at other options. Local junk yard wanted too much money for transplant consoles, exploder, mountaineer etc...so, we're gonna build a custom console. WITH CUPHOLDERS!!!!!
The custom build consoles I have seen so far were all without cupholders. So, if we're gonna do it, we're gonna do it right
.
----------
Ok, so what does a fella need to make custom made cupholders
?... hmmm
To start, I want them to have a wow factor. I want whoever sees them to say, man, I woulda never thought of that. So, here is what I came up with...
.
An idea to end all ideas. What does it take? a 1/2 x 24 x 48 piece of particle board, a couple 3" PVC caps, a few kitchem drains, some heap big glue. a 8 x 34 satin nickel kick panel, some screws, countersink, and some black vinyl. Dig it...this is gonna be cool!!!
.
Cut the bottom of the drain out with a hole saw so it is nice and clean.
.
.
Grind off the outside of the threaded flange so i fits down inside the 3" pvc plug.
.
.
Glue 'er on down in there and paint black on the inside. set aside to dry.
----------
Decided to do the 60/40 seat mod while I was in the modding mood and its a good excuse to bring a seat into the house while its so freakin hot outside. Once I made the leap and went past the point of no return, it was pretty easy. I used a sawz-all to cut the metal brackets that are welded to the driver's seat frame. cut off the foam with a nice sharp knife, trimmed the remaining upholstry, and voila! I now have 40/40 buckets with a nice clean stitch job on the driver's seat that looks pretty clean. The seat airbag kinda was an unforseen pain in the butt. But I worked around it
.
.
Completed and re-installed:
.
.
Now there is a ton of room for the custom console!! Here is the first few mockups with the shifter and without and with the cover and without:
More pix to follw as I progress.
Thanks for checkin out what I have so far.

Re: floor mounted automatic shifter
I really had no intentions of hi-jacking the OP thread. Perhaps this should be moved to a build log?
----------
Well, what started out as a simple shifter install has turned into a full on floor console, seat modification. WOW!
Now that I have a console that I really like, I will do the floor shifter next weekend. But here are a few pix of the floor console and the cup holders from hell!!! Enjoy!

Re: floor mounted automatic shifter
That looks so great, that I'm having a hard time finding words to describe it! I've seen a lot of hacked together and rough interior modifications, but that thing looks like something that you'd find from a real automaker. Great job!

Re: floor mounted automatic shifter
It is done...
Even relocated the OD button that was on the end of the old column shifter to the new floor console, and it works like a champ
