Unhappy 4wd u joint replacement

ok guys, my u joints are goin out and i have a new set but dont know where to start. i took the wheel off and the brake pad and rotor. there is a plate behind that with studs coming out and that should be the only thing keeping the axle in right? if i take that plate off should the axle slide out? and if so, when i put it back in do i need to replace seals or anything? i'm really a noob about this so any help would be greatly appreciated

Start by giving us some info on your ride, if you add it to your signature it's on every post you make. My other suggestion? Buy a manual, they are invaluable if you're intent on doing your own wrenching.

hey, sorry. gonna fix that here in a sec. I have a 93 xlt 5spd. with the 4.0. i have a chilton's manual but it really doesn't go in depth on the part that i really need. i can take that plate off but from there should the axle slide right out? and if so, is there any gaskets/seals i should be worried about?

You have manual hubs? Are you talking about the u-joints on the end of the axle? I've done it on my '88 and it's alot of work. My Haynes manual had the procedure in two places. I also replaced the bearings on the end of the axle (in the hub), nobody around here knew what they were. I took some out (trashed) so I put some in. Dig deep in the manual, its probably in two places too.

sheesh, looks like i forgot to mention a lot of things lol. srry bout that. yep, i converted the push button 4x4 to manuals and i am talking about the front axle u joints. just wondering when i pull those axles if there is any gaskets or something that needs to be replaced when i put them back in. thanks for suggesting the 2 places. definitely take another look in the morning.

No gaskets just gotta pull the whole spindle/disk assembly. Check the ball joint before you start. If they need it nows the time. Check the tie rod ends too, might as well tighten the whole front end up.

If its the scissor axle setup you just take the bolts out and the whole axle shaft pulls right out.
