Default 5MOD scraping sound in neutral 1st 2nd and 5th

Hello all, just as the title says, I have an issue with my manual transmission making a scraping sound. It only happens in 1st, 2nd and 5th gear. It also happens when I move the shifter over to the far left or far right. The truck is a 2006, 3.XL V6 (the smaller V6 for that year, not the 4.0L) and it only 28.9K miles on it.

It very well might be me being overly cautious, but I want to be sure. Also, here's a few videos, one with me moving the shifter in neutral, and the other driving in the parking lot.

i can hear what your talking about, but not sure what it would be.... it sounds really faint.... have you done any work on it recently... maybe check your throwout bearing, although that should only happen with the clutch, and that sounds like a different scrape... maybe another bearing in the transmission?

hey i have some news for ya... i just got my exhaust installed today and now since it is so quiet in the cab i can hear the same scraping sound in my transmission.... it comes and goes depending on if im shifting or not, but can be heard in neutral and it changes tone when you move the shifter left and right in neutral.... transmission works perfectly so im not worried either, but some insight would be nice.... anyone have some thoughts?

Ahh, thanks for the input... I thought it might not be something I need to worry about.. but wanted to check just incase it's a known issue.

Did you ever get to the bottom of this?

I have exactly the same noise in 1st gear and lightly in 2nd...

Any advice appreciated.

Make sure you have fluid in the transmission...If you don't know yet there are 3 vent holes in the top of the M5OD 5 speed transmission that leak past the rubber seals and allow the fluid to escape...You can't see it because it only happens when moving really, but your transmission can be bone dry and sound like backfiring in the exhaust.

I would say its the presser plate. If you rev it up does it get louder or stop?

I have a similar problem. Except in every gear and louder while moving. I am about to do a fluid change or fill up as I do not know the level of the fluid right now. I will update once I have done it.

bad news. as i just got this truck a few weeks ago i didnt know whats what. but when i went to change the fluid it was over flowing. i took the fill bolt out and i just started pouring out and all over me. so i can for sure say its not the fluid atleast for my situation

Too much fluid isn't good either.

Does your stick feel "loose"?? i know i had some bad noises coming from mine, and it was due to the slop in the stick. I ordered new bushings etc and seemed to help. If your stick feels loose and has play in the gears i would suggest that. Mine was not lining up rite and was making noise cause of the slop, let me see if i can find where i got that,
link to kit http://www.allstategear.com/M50D%20S...pair%20Kit.htm
link to video explaining it

just like video i had no bushings left...
now my stick is nice and tight, and pretty cheep too, i checked with the ford garage and they wanted more then what allstate wanted. maybe give that a try
any ideas if this would help him?

did anyone figure this out? my stick is not loose so dont think its bushings but scraping sounds in all gears when moving and pitch of noise changes when i move left and right in neutral. one shop said input shaft bearing other said synchros and both said drive till breaks but i cant sell it like this. dont think it would be synchros if makes noise in neutral?

I know exactly what that sound is. I had to replace my plastic bearings like in the video futurefd posted, and now the noise is gone. I had two metal washers in there and that was it. One of them had fallen into the transmission. The vibration of the shift collars causes this noise. The noise changes when you slide the shifter left or right because you are changing shift rails between two shafts spinning at different speeds (if you have the clutch pedal out then the input shaft and countershaft are spinning even if the output shaft isn't). The noise goes away when you push in the clutch, right? Get the plastic washers/bushings and it will solve this problem.
