Default ranger transfercase question

how good are the ranger 4x4 systems?
mainly the automatic tranny and transfercase.

how do they compare to the durability of the 80's model toyota 4x4 systems?
thanx!

Not familiar with Toyota 4x4

The Rangers are tough. Some bash the auto tranny and say that it'll need to be rebuilt at 80K. There are plenty who have gotten more life out of them though. The t-case itself is is tough, too. But most Rangers have the electric setup, and the problems are usually in the the shift motor.

Your perfect solution would be a Borg-Warner 1354 manual transfer case. The manual t-case was found in '02 and '03 Rangers with the manual transmission. Those cases aren't really abundant, but they're out there, and 5000% better than the electric crap that most of us have. The manual case is is direct swap for said electric crap.

The BW1354 manual cases from the late 80' to present are pretty much interchangeable but still not that easy to locate.
The only difference I have found is the shift lever shape, some are bent one direction others the opposite.
There might be an issue with the speed o meter as well, early stuff had a cable, newer is FBW (fly by wire).
Either way, it is well worth having the manual transfer case.
