Default 4x4 problem 4x4 low is s even after the knob is turn to 2wd

My father was driving the ranger. I don't know what happen, but we were pulling our riding lawn mower out of the barn because it would not start. the truck is saying in is in 4X4 low but the knob is turn to 2wd. what could be the problem.
what my dad did could have switch from 2wd to 4x4 low and screwed sometime up when pulling the mower out. conduction outside was ground was very wet.

second: for a manual: clutch pushed to the floor, in neutral, service brake pressed
im not positive for a auto, im sure someone can chime in to help out.

in order to engage 4x4 Lo, you have to press the brake pedal and while doing so, turn the switch to 4x4LO. in order to disengage 4x4 LO, truck must be stopped, Brake pressed, then switch back to 4x2.
