when I engage my 4x4 to 4-hi it sounds like it engages at the transfer case, but not the wheels, but occasionally the wheels will slam into play. most of the time it does not engage fully....any suggestions?

mine does that when i dont let off the gas and switch it it made a huge bang and then grabbed. i guess thats wat u get when on ice and the light changes green and ur just spinning.

that mod make your front hubs locked all the time. very bad on gas and more parts turning then need be.
i did a mod simmiler to that mod, very easy to do, and works real good. that way i KNOW I am in 4wd, just dont like having to get out and lock it (my temperature right now is
-20c its cold)
but it works and it's a free mod, compaired to what it would cost for a conversion kit
here's the one i did. i would recommend this one because you can lock it and unlock it.

Maybe your spline gears stripped, i.e. they slip and then only sometimes bite

That mod for adding the manual locking hubs is great! I am going to try something similar out tomorrow.

The only problem I see with this is ruining two $135 hubs... Definitely check out the other link!

Oh yeah... update on that 4x4 hub mod... THATS THE WAY TO GO! I use my 4x4 at least 3 times a month and its not too much trouble, works every time. Thanks alot!!!

i hav an problem to engage front diff and rear diff .
press the switch on dash , no lights coms on and no ingaging .
the solnoids don't open but there are vacuum .
anny ideas or diagrams

Who all has done this? Im highly considering it.. Had a problem this weekend with my hubs not locking, and I was at the vacuum systems mercy. Needless to say, I had to get pull out cause they wouldnt lock :L

I did EXACTLY this. I'm 100% happy with it and have not seen any noticeable gas mileage change. I usually get between 19-20, and I'm still getting that. Although it must have some effect on mileage, so seeing it hit 20mpg days might be over.

Just sucks because I've battled with the hubs for years, now that I've bypassed them and get my 4x4 working, no snow.....

The other mod looks good too, though.

1999 4.0L supercab. 4dr, 4x4, 5spd - All stock except some accessories and small upgrades to worn items.

when i switch to 4 hi on my 95 b4000 it sometimes clunks a little, but i read in the manual that this is completely normal when going from 2wd to 4wd or 4wd back to 2wd, so I'm guessing as long as its staying engaged a clunk or two should be normal, but if its not staying engaged then theres probably an issue.
