Default I have a Ford Ranger with 4-wheel drive. Now the 4-wheel drive is stuck...

...in low 4-wheel drive mode.? I drove it in snow with temperatures in the low 0s. What can I do to get it back into 2-wheel drive?

Place the transmission in neutral then put the truck back into 2wd.

Your transfer case motor is broken.
This is when you turn your electric switch then a motor on the transfer case engages the transfer case, when these break they have a habit of doing it low-range. You need to replace that piece. My Navigator did it couple years ago and it is a common ford problem.

I have a 2004, Borg Warner which also stuck in 4L. Yes it's a common problem, & from what I've read it's been one for sometime.

This one is newer than most of the posts and threads I've found, after taking it apart to look at it I found the problem in the position sensor, contained in the very outer gray cover where the wires go in. It's obviously one of those "no user serviceable parts inside" gadgets but being as it was screwed up anyway I pried it open to have a look.

One of the contact brushes was bent & mangled, which I was able to straighten it out and got it to work once with the motor assembly out and laying on the ground. I took it apart again and found the contact mangled again, from a rough spot on the sensor disc I imagine. But at least now it shifts from 2W to 4H.

I found another motor on E-Bay, which started at 25.00 and wound up at 43.00. Till then I'll carry a 10MM socket and a T15 Torx in case I get in a bind and really need 4L. The case can be shifted with the motor off fairly easily - a pair of pliers will get you going again in a pinch once you get the motor assembly off, - about 5 or ten minutes worth if the plug doesn't give you too much trouble. Mine comes off without removing the dampner also, so four bolts and the plug basically.

I've heard of guys driving around with the motor assembly off and shifting as they need to manually. Also I found a bolt on gadget called a Shiftster I might try if I have more trouble down the road.

Default 1998 ford ranger

I have a 98 ranger 3L and it will not go into 4H or 4L. The light come on for a min. and then go out never going into 4wd. Could this be my shifting motor going bad or something else?

Sounds like it already went bad possibly. Mine went bad a few years ago, and $590 later, I had a new one.

94 ranger 4L v6
replaced original automatic hubs w/ manual several years back but still have buttons in cab, no 4WD shifter.

i'm stuck in 4L too. odd thing was, this all started when i shifted into 4L and the interior indicator light did not come on, even though i did go into 4L. now i can't get out. i've tried tapping what i thought was the solenoid but i'm not sure if i was tapping the right part.

when i push the 4L button, i can hear a faint click.

does my situation with the indicator light sound like i have the same issue as the original poster?

ps: this is an unlicensed beater truck/lumber wagon/farm truck, so i'm not going to drop a lot of cash into it.

thanks dudes
Eddie
