Re: Open diff. To limited slip?! Help
to swap the whole axle? id rather just drop a lsd in to save the work, what would be the best way to go about this also the cheapest?

Re: Open diff. To limited slip?! Help
unless you did a rear axle swap to a level II axle or explorer axle. you have a 8.8 28 spline.
you can get the same version of that carrier in 28 spline. or get a lunch box locker.

Re: Open diff. To limited slip?! Help
It would be cheaper just to swap the whole rear end. With swapping the rear end, you don't have to set the gears up with shims and stuff since its already done. I got my 8.8 4.10 with L/S for $120.

Re: Open diff. To limited slip?! Help
Its not just drop it in. You have to remove the axles, then pull the pig, pull the pinion. Then re-install (setup) the gears. Youd be money ahead to buy another axle. Even if not an explorer.

28.
only rangers that came with The 31-spline 8.8-inch axle came only with the 2002 FX4 and 2003-up FX4 Level II and more recently was a separate option in the last couple years. also 4.56 geared axles '99-up are 31-spline

go to the JY and pull a ranger LS carrier. buy the $99 rebuild ford kit from Summit. rebuild it. put it in and set up the gears.... done.

Re: Open diff. To limited slip?! Help
Old thread I know, but...
I had purchased a 94 reg cab 2WD 2.3, but was too weak.
Sold it, then got lucky and found another locally.
It's a 94 4x4 supercab (aka extend cab) with a 4.0.
I looked at the rear and front dif tab/label and apparently
it has DANA 35 with 3L73 88.
Which of course means it came with a LSD 3.73 ratio 8.8 standard.
Now are these hard to find or was this standard with the larger 4.0 V6?
I think this would be a good swap if you can live with the ratio and drum brakes.

Re: Open diff. To limited slip?! Help
I'm not clear what you are asking. The front axle is a Dana 35. The rear axle would be a Ford 8.8"
If the truck has an LSD, it would just be in the rear axle. You could order them that way and some models came from the factory like that. Many came with just open differentials as well. My '11 has an open rear axle, which I mean to rectify.
According to the torsen web site, the same LSD can be installed in the front as well but, like I said, they never came from the factory with an LSD in the front and it was never an order-able option.
