Default 4wd wont disengage

First off its a 99 ranger with manual hubs. When I lock the hubs in and turn the knob to 4wd it locks in. Then when I turn the knob back to 2wd it goes off but the drivetrain is still working in 4wd unless I back up first. Why is that? I did notice one of the manual hubs when I unlock it I have to spin the rotor forward and backwards a bit to get that cv shaft to disengage. Could that be why? Thanks

Have you inspected the hub? it could be dry or worn causing it to stick.

Yeah I checked them on Saturday when I put new wheel bearings on. Pass side had some water in it cleaned it out and put a little grease on the gears. There brand new hubs I just put on a week ago.

Driverside is fine by what I can tell no water in it but I didn't put any grease in it either. It was doing this before I put the grease in there but I am wondering if that is also causing some problems.

well i think i found the problem. one of the new manual hubs will not release fully so that cv shaft is always spinning. not sure if it is the problem but i contacted the company to see if they will replace it and then i can see if that was it or not.
