Default Drive train problem, need help

My 97 2.3l 5 speed manual was running fine this morning on my way to work. Got half way home and it started to act up. ( It feels like abs kicked on in the rear, the rear end has a hit and miss drag. Almost like a miss fire.) It does it in 1, 2, 3, 4, and o/d. It doesn't do it in reverse and the truck idles great. It shifts into all gears just fine (NO gear shift problems). I pulled the cover off the rear diff and drained the gear lube. Everything looks good (No metel shavings).

Thinking its time rebuild the tranny and replace u-joints.

Just woundering if anyone has had the same problems and if I'm on the right track or it its a easy fix. Truck might have to sit for a bit since im in between jobs.

It might be a rear axel bearing, or U joint, do some checking befor tearing the trans down, it might be a simple fix.

Update.
I did rear brakes, rear brake hardware and put in new rear parking brake cables. The parking brake was stuck on. That still didn't fix the problem. There is no noise coming from the u-joints, rear axle, or tranny. When the rear locks up, the truck sounds like its missing (cuts out, no engine sound).

The next thing I am going to try when I get some money and time is U-joints. Since thats a cheap, quick fix.
